He was predeceased by: his parents, James "Joe" Smith and Myrtle Smith; his brother James Smith; and his son Matt Smith. He is survived by: his wife April Smith; his children, Joseph (Jennifer) of Mac Arthur, WV, Justin Smith of Mac Arthur, WV and Courtney Smith (Trey); his grandchildren, Zack, Mason, Addison and Peyton; and his siblings, Becky Nierman, Robin Hall and Mark Smith.
