He was predeceased by : his parents, French Moats and Fannie Jane Moats (Simmons); his sons, Randy and Brian; and his grandson Joey.

He is survived by : his spouse Jerline Marie Moates (Benson); his sons, Edward A. Moates (Penny) of Franklin, WV and Michael E. Moates (Nichelle) of Brandywine, WV; and his sisters, Dorothy Atkins (Jesse) of Mt. Clinton, VA and Helen Mines of Clover Hill, VA. He is also survived by 3 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
