He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph G. Bates, Sr. and Ida (DeSantis). He is survived by: his son Joseph G. Bates, III; his grandchildren, Mason (Alyssa) of Saint Augustine, Peyton Taylor Bates of Washington, DC and Camden Joseph Bates of Washington, DC; his pets, Banjo, Jack and Cash; his sister Carole Zaninelli of Follansbee, WV; his nieces, Melanie and Melissa Zaninelli; his great-nephew Brax Ware; and his great-niece Mila Ware.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Hancock County Animal Shelter.
