He was predeceased by: his parents, Granville Coneides and Nelly Mae Roberts; his wife Charlee Roberts; his siblings, Lester, Cecil, Junior, Dale, Lloyd and Bernice; and his grandfather John Roberts.

He is survived by: his grandchildren, Amanda Compton, Michelle Cooper, Brandon Mitchell and Christopher Mitchell; his stepchildren, Angela Mitchell (Doran) and Jon Wiggin; and his sister Virginia. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

He also received recognition for his contributions to Appalachian Country music.
