He was predeceased by: his parents, Charles Edward Clay and Delsie Cisco Clay; and his brother Claude Allen Clay. He is survived by: his wife Lena Gail Whitt Clay; his stepchildren, Amber Lilly and Jason Fitzpatrick; and his siblings, Elaine Duty (Jerry), Sidney Clay (Diana), Charles "Hank" Clay (Opal Annette), James Clay, William Clay (Gwendolyn) and David Clay (Karen). He is also survived by five step-grandchildren.
