He was predeceased by : his parents, Felen Messer and Fannie Muncy Messer; his brothers, Freddy and Richard Messer; and his brothers-in-law, Jim Martin, Phillip Belton, John Belton and Michael Belton.

He is survived by : his wife Carol Belton Messer; his daughter Maggie Messer of Kermit, WV; his sister-in-law Ruthie Martin (Jim); his nieces and nephews, Freddy Messer Jr. and Kim Maynard (Terry); and his cousins, Patty Newsome, Marsha Newsome, Violet Dillon, Ralph Muncy, Carter Muncy, Basil Jr. Muncy and Linda Martin.
