He was predeceased by: his parents, Kenneth Eugene and Evelyn Wilson Shafer. He is survived by: his children, John Shafer (Carly), Robert, Terisa (Jesse), Kayla, Amaya and Ashley; his close friend Melissa Simmons; his aunts and uncles, Karen Kennedy, Joyce Sharp, Paul Wilson and James Shafer; and his cousins, Jason Proctor, Chuck Shafer and Lisa West. He is also survived by seven grandchildren.
