He was predeceased by: his parents, Lelia Mathess and Thurl Mathess; his son James Leonard Mathess II (Jimmy); his parents-in-law, George and Audrey Hendershot; his brothers, Ronald (Ronnie) and Glen Mathess (Butch); his brother-in-law Philip Tucker (Phil); and his siblings' children, David Mathess (Sock), Ronald Mathess Jr. (Bub), Joseph Kennedy (Joey) and Nikki Livengood.
He is survived by: his wife Frances Hendershot Mathess; his daughter Kim Mathess Trimble (Ed); his grandchildren, Megan Trimble (Jimmy Belz) of Haddonfield, NJ and Tyler Mathess (Emily); his siblings, Carolyn Davis (Gerald), Cathy Boyce (Fred), Doris Tucker and Doug Mathess (Kathy); and his siblings-in-law, Helen Kennedy (Charles), Betty Grazulis, Lavon Mathess, Deb Mathess and George Hendershot (Brenda). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
