It is with great sadness that we announce the death of James Layton Athey of Nutter Fort, West Virginia, who passed away on December 9, 2025, at the age of 87, leaving to mourn family and friends. Family and friends are welcome to send flowers or leave their condolences on this memorial page and share them with the family.
He was predeceased by: his parents, James Layton Sr. and Filomena Maria Marra (Flora). He is survived by: his children, John Athey (Deby) of Clarksburg, Steve Athey (Bernice) of Naples, FL and Gina Palmer (Brian) of Clarksburg; his grandchildren, Steve Athey of Erie, PA, Scott Athey of Clarksburg, Bayley Matthey (Zach) of Morgantown and Kelsey Drummond (Christian) of Clarksburg; and his great grandchildren, Sutton Drummond of Clarksburg and Clay Matthey of Morgantown.
Visitation will be held on Friday, December 12th 2025 from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Amos Carvelli Funeral Home (201 Edison St, Nutter Fort, WV 26301). A prayer will be held on Friday, December 12th 2025 at 7:30 PM. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, December 13th 2025 at 10:00 AM at the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church (8092 Third St, Stonewood, WV 26301). A burial will be held on Saturday, December 13th 2025 at 2:00 PM at the Amos Carvelli Funeral Home (201 Edison St, Nutter Fort, WV 26301).
