He was predeceased by: his parents, Lon Joseph Simmons and Hazel Virginia Simmons (Kimble); his brother Norman R. "Bud" Simmons; and his sisters-in-law, Anita Simmons and JoAnn Simmons.
He is survived by: his wife Bonnie K. Simmons (Runion); his children, Christine Heavner (Nick) of Moorefield, WV, Cathy Berg (Danny) of Maysville, WV, Charlene Crawford (Dwayne) of Chambersburg, PA, Joe V. Simmons Jr. of Petersburg, WV and Daniel Simmons (Mark) of Washington, DC; his grandchildren, William "Willie" Heavner Jr., Sarah Gilhuys, Danny "Dusty" Berg, Jr., Valerie Ratliff (Josh), Kaitlyn Berg, Sandy Crawford, Brianna Crawford and Alyssa Crawford; and his siblings, Stella Weatherholtz (Robert) of Dorcas, WV, Mahlon Simmons (Connie) of Mt Airy, MD and Troy Simmons of Conway, SC. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held on Tuesday, May 20th 2025 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Schaeffer Funeral Home (11 N Main St, Petersburg, WV 26847). A funeral service was held on Wednesday, May 21st 2025 at 1:00 PM at the same location. A graveside service was held on Wednesday, May 21st 2025 at 2:00 PM at the Cherry Hill Cemetery (123 Schmucker Rd, Upper Tract, WV 26866).
