Richard Earl Marteny Obituary
Richard Earl Marteny, lovingly known to many as Dad, Grandpa, Brother, and Friend, passed away peacefully at home on January 7, 2026, at the age of 76. He was born on August 24, 1949, in Moatsville, Barbour County, West Virginia, and spent his life rooted in the land, family, and values that shaped who he was. He was a hardworking man through and through. Over the years, he worked as a construction worker, coal miner, and farm hand never afraid of long days or hard labor. Work was more than a job to him; it was a way to provide, to stay busy, and to feel accomplished.
What Richard loved most was his farm. He found peace in caring for his cattle, working the land, planting his garden, and putting up fresh vegetables through canning. He took pride in doing things with his hands and doing them right. He also enjoyed collecting guns and antiques, appreciating the history and craftsmanship behind each piece. Family meant everything to Richard. He was the father of three children: Shana Marie Marteny, Marissa Amy Sams, and Ian Matthew Marteny. He was a proud grandfather to seven grandchildren: Nicholus Earl Triplett, Casandra Marie Triplett, Alexis Page Marsh, Aleah Hope Weaver, and Braydn Michael Weaver, great- granddaughter; Wrenleigh Jean Weaver.
His love for them was steady, quiet, and deep. Richard is survived by his brothers, Darris Marteny and Arnold Marteny; his niece, Kristy Marteny; and nephews Daris Marteny, Rodney and Shawn Bolyard, and Darren and Jason Marteny. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Opal Poling Marteny and Francis Marteny, a grandchild; Tyler Adam Ervin, and by his sister; Nancy Bolyard. Richard was thankful for every day he was given. He loved his family, valued his friendships, especially with the ladies, and lived life in a way that was honest and true to who he was.
His presence will be deeply missed, but his memory will live on in the land he worked in, the family he loved, and the lives he touched. Family and Friends may gather at the Kittle Family Funeral Home 265 Beech Ave., Philippi, on Saturday, January 10, 2026, from 6pm until 9 pm, and again on Sunday, January 11, 2026, from 9 am until 1 pm the funeral hour. A funeral service will be conducted in the funeral home chapel with Speaker Nicholus Triplett as the presider. Burial will follow on the Marteny Family Farm.
