He was predeceased by: his father Ralph Choate of Texas; his brother Chris Passey; and his mother-in-law Patty Bassett. He is survived by: his mother Sandra JoAnn (Stoetzel); his wife Melissa "Missy" Passey (Bassett); his children, Howard Starkey (Jackie) of Reader, WV and Joetta Gayheart (Adam) of Reader, WV; his grandchildren, Braxton Gayheart of Adam, Gayheart, Jr., Gabby Gayheart, Isabella Gayheart, Beulah Gayheart, Waylon Gayheart, Samantha Allen and Jenna Duke; and his siblings, Cheryl Lynn Passey of Arizona and Mark Fairly of Arizona. He is also survived by five great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
