He was predeceased by: his father Chester Melvin. He is survived by: his wife Shelby Jean Belcher Melvin; his children, Dr. Kelly Melvin (Kristina Melvin) and Stacy Canterbury (David Canterbury); his grandchildren, Willow Canterbury, Thomas James Melvin (TJ) and Toby Melvin; and his brothers, C. J. Melvin Jr. and Michael Melvin (Mary).
