He was predeceased by: his parents, John Gwinn and Eva Gwinn (Hanshew); and his siblings, Norris Jane Gwinn Hall, Rose Ann Gwinn and Monte Dean Gwinn.

He is survived by: his wife Carol Smith Gwinn; his daughter Susan Gainer (Paul Gainer); his granddaughters, Eva and Chesley Gainer; his sister Debbie Neely (Gary); and his siblings-in-law, Cecil Hall and Nancy Gwinn. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.
