He was predeceased by : his parents, Kelly Kerns and Gracie Campbell Kerns; his wife Iola Ryan Kerns; his former life partner Violet Kerns; his daughter Pam Walker (Bill); his siblings, Ralph Kerns (Eunice), James Lester Kerns (Zona), Benny Kerns (Mavis) and Dorthy Kerns; and his grandson Arthur Pernell.

He is survived by : his sister Jean Williams (John); his children, Jerry Kerns (Josie), Donnie Kerns (Ruby), Ronnie Kerns (Bonnie) and Beverly Hartley; and his grandchildren, Paula Pernell (Deb), Don Kerns II (Amy), Jerry Kerns II, Kelly McCall (Arron), Ronnie Kerns II (Amy), Jay Kerns (Heather), Sarah Hammond (Daniel) and Gerald Densmore (Janie). He is also survived by 16 great grandchildren, and 12 great great grandchildren.
