We announce the death of Nancy Jane Shewmake of Smithfield, West Virginia, who passed away on September 16, 2026, at the age of 76. She was predeceased by: her husbands, Robert L. Bates and Wesley D. Shewmake; her son Steven D. Bates; and her siblings, Sue Helvie, Robert, Donald, William Haught and Betty Lou Thompson.
She is survived by: her children, Petina Gump (Jeffrey) of Carolina, WV, Rose Bates of Smithfield, WV and Robert L. Bates (Christy) of Smithfield, WV; her grandchildren, John L. Bates, Seth Bates (Brooke), Cassie Bates, Triston Bates and Sean Bates; her brothers, Dick "Richard" Haught (Judy) of Chester, WV, Leroy Haught (Penny) of Wallace, WV and Kenny Burt Haught (Mary) of Mannington, WV; and her siblings-in-law, Denise Haught of Smithfield, WV, Louise Haught of Mannington, WV and John Helvie of Indiana.
Visitation will be held on Monday, September 21st 2026 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Palmer Funeral Home (Morgan St, Pine Grove, WV 26419, USA). A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, September 22nd 2026 at 11:00 AM at the same location.
