Family, friends, and acquaintances remember Rita for her warmth, thoughtfulness, and the moments shared together. She was predeceased by: her parents, Lenard Lee and Lavinia Lee Rust Chittenden; her sister Lois Sawyer; and her stepson Joseph Smith. She is survived by: her husband David A. Smith of Walton, WV; her son Mark Nelson of Charleston, WV; her stepson Christopher Smith of Spencer, WV; and her sisters, Carol Carter (Dale) of Illinois and Betty Politsch (Ray) of Illinois. She is also survived by five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 1st 2026 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at the Johnson Creek Baptist Church (1497 Vineyard Ridge, Walton, WV 25286). A funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 1st 2026 at 1:00 PM at the same location.
