He was predeceased by: his parents, Helen Yates (Bernas) and Robert W. Yates; his grandson Luke Yates; his siblings-in-law, Bruce and Sue Mager; his stepbrothers, Sam and Robert Yates; and his parents-in-law, Bob and Elaine Mager.

He is survived by: his wife Rose E. Yates (Mager); his children, George (Jennifer Yates) of McMechen and Karen (Steve Westlund) of Loris, SC; his grandchildren, Shannon Yates, Zack (Lindsey Yates), Walker Westlund and Delaney Westlund; his siblings, Walter (Rose Yates) of Benwood, Roberta Redd (Phil Persinger) and Mary Truex; his nephew Bob (Shermaine Mager) of Glen Dale; his daughters, Angie Schubert and Lois McNinch; and his pet Ben. He is also survived by nephews and niece and Yates nephews and nieces.
