He was predeceased by: his parents, Allen Louis Emerson and Mariam Sveen Emerson; his wife Ramola Jean Stephenson (Jeanne); his daughter Kristen Cordova; and his sister Janet Kessler.

He is survived by: his sons, Erik Emerson (Sharon) of Cheyenne and Arne Emerson of Santa Monica, California; his stepchildren, Pam Bartosh (Andy) of Casper, Penny Henderson (Danny) of Casper, Wyoming, Steve Stephenson (Samon) of Sidney, Montana and Dean Stephenson (Catrinia) of Casper, Wyoming; and his siblings, Roger Emerson (Donna) of Barneveld, Wisconsin and DeLores Koch of LaCrescent, Minnesota. He is also survived by 22 grandchildren; 40 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
