He is survived by: his wife Mary; his sons, Douglas Bates (Lisa) and Jason Bates; his grandchildren, Jordan Bates (Kara), Megan DeBruyn (Mark) and Austin Bates; his sister Lucy Lea Murray; and his siblings-in-law, Bill and Sharon Malcom. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
