He was predeceased by : his parents, Elizabeth and Harry Sr.; his son Steven; and his granddaughter Amber. He is survived by : his wife Jan; his children, Bruce, Jonathan and Sarah; his grandchildren, Lauren, Morgan, Kellen and Cole; his sister Janice Minton; and his nieces, Cathy Green, Elizabeth Myers, Cynthia Gwilliams and Christie Hall.

Toward the end of his career, he donated an eight-foot, wood-carved eagle to the grounds of the Cheyenne Veterans Affairs Hospital in Wyoming, honoring all who have served our country and those who support them.

Kent Hooper wrote a sympathy message

“I am sorry for your loss- my mother also passed recently at nearly 92. I am currently going through old photos and I find many with what looks like your H. C. Gurney, Jr. If he grew up in a suburb of IL near La Grange (Western Springs, La Grange Park?), he knew my mother, Grace Johnson--even took her to the high school senior prom.
