He was predeceased by: his parents, Carl Leroy Smith and Margaret Bernice Stucks; his son David Paul Smith; and his grandparents, Ethel, William Stucks, Mimi and Emmit Smith.

He is survived by: his wife Sheri Smith of Pavillion, Wyoming; and his children, Michael Smith (Jaime) of Riverton, Wyoming, Sharon Moreno (Min) of Marbelton, Wyoming, Melissa Allen of Riverton, Wyoming, Heather McGarr of Riverton, Wyoming and Daniel Smith (Kate) of Lacey, Wyoming. He is also survived by 24 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
