Crowe's Mortuary has been serving the residents of Rutherford and surrounding counties since 1914. The mortuary's name in the early days was Hovis and Keeter and was located in Rutherfordton near the present day courthouse.
In the mid 30's, Mr. Hovis and Mr. Keeter split the business and continued to operate under their own names respectively. Hovis Funeral Home was located in Spindale on the present day Maryland Avenue and Keeter Mortuary was located in Rutherfordton at the corner of Main and Fifth Street. In the 1950's the Crowe family bought intrest in the Hovis Funeral Home and the name was changed to Hovis-Crowe Funeral Home.
The funeral home was fully purchased from the Hovis family in 1962 with Fred and Louise Crowe being the owners. Also in 1962, the Keeter Mortuary was also purchased by Fred and Louise and the name changed to Keeter-Crowe Mortuary. This gave the firm two locations to serve both towns and was the only funeral home in Rutherford County to have two locations.
Fred Crowe was a licensed funeral director and Louise was a registerd nurse who went on to become a licensed funeral director serving in the family business. In 1969, both firms were combined and the name changed to Crowe's Mortuary and Chapel. The new funeral home was built on its present day site bordering 74 Bypass and the city limits of both Spindale and Rutherfordton.
In 1999, construction was begun on a new crematory to serve the citizens of Rutherford County. Crowe's is the only funeral home in Rutherford County with its onsite crematory. Mark and Paul Crowe continue the tradition of this family run business and are involved in its day to day operation. Our dignified services have made Crowe's Mortuary a tradition in your time of need.
