He was predeceased by : his parents, Henry Mertens and Mary Mertens (Van Steenvoort); and his siblings, Victor Mertens, Ernest Mertens (Mildred), Joseph Mertens (Betty), Lucy Ziegler (Joe), Dorothy Kalinowski (Ed), Rosalie Lucken (Eldon), Jeanette Weirick (Glenn), Florence Del Guidice (Richard), Mary Evansen (Richard), Henry Mertens (Ann), John Mertens (Bernice), Cecil Mertens (Carol), Gerald Mertens (Shirley), Peter and Jenny Kuntz.

He is survived by : his wife Janet Kuntz; his children, Richard Mertens, Laura Nielsen (Keith), Ken Mertens (Chris Janke), Jeanne Aasand (Jerry), Connie Mertens (Greg Kaiser) and Craig Mertens (Kristen); his grandchildren, Douglas Nielsen (Bre), Rebecca Clark (Ryan), Kristina Hickel (Alex), Zach Mertens (Jennifer), Adam Mertens (Kelsey), Nick Mertens (Jackie), Isaac Mertens (Casey), Emily Zangari (Pat), Garrett Aasand (Billie), Michael Kaiser, Liz Kaiser, Brooks Mertens, Jace Mertens and Sydney Mertens; his sister Phyllis Lang (Richard); and his in-laws, Michael Kuntz, Raymond Kuntz, Jake, Helen Kuntz, Theresa Kuntz and Mary Dahlen. He is also survived by 20 great grandchildren.

Visitation was held on Friday, April 19th 2024 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the St. Joseph Catholic Church (517 4th St NE, Devils Lake, ND 58301). A rosary was held on Friday, April 19th 2024 at 7:00 PM at the same location. A Mass of Christian burial was held on Saturday, April 20th 2024 at 10:00 AM at the same location.

Memorials may be directed to the Charles Mertens Family Scholarship Fund being established at Lake Region State College or the charity of the donor's choice in memory of Charles.
