He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph A. Carey and Helena M. Carey (O'Sullivan); and his brothers, Joseph A. Carey Jr. and Kenneth J. Carey. He is survived by: his brother Gilbert L. Carey Sr. (Barbara); his nieces and nephews, Gilbert L. Jr., Kristen M. Howells (Bradley), Scott Carey and Jaclynn L. Cook (Matthew); his great-nieces and great-nephews, Noah R. Carey, Evan J. Carey, Jillian L. Howells, Maren A. Howells and Adrian A. Carey; and his cousins, Joanne Bleau-Theileman, David, Waldi Cavanagh, Karen O'Sullivan and Glenn.
