He was predeceased by: his parents, Harry Applegate and Mildred Applegate (Mounts); his son Shane Applegate; and his siblings, Woodrow Applegate, Jeanette Applegate and Anna Mae Swartz (Applegate).

He is survived by: his daughters, Jennifer Lee (Douglas) of Austin, TX and Amy Applegate (Alex Hessman) of Lansing, MI; his sisters, Becky Applegate and Martha Applegate of Wheeling, WV; and his grandchildren, Lauren Lee, Braden Lee, Otto Hessman and Lola Hessman.
