She was predeceased by: her parents, Harold Spurgeon and Garnet Spurgeon (Fraelich); her husband William Thorne; and her brothers, Wilbur C. "Bill" Spurgeon and Harold "Jack" Spurgeon.

She is survived by: her children, Robert B. Thorne (Nancy) and Colleen Thorne (Rick Gillies); her granddaughters, Katherine Griffeth (Alex) and Emily Miller (Cody); her great grandchildren, Drake, Trey Griffeth, Kaylee and Uriah Miller; her brother Larry "Butch" Spurgeon (Sandra); and her pet Bella C.. She is also survived by other nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, consider donating in Shirley's name to Richland Pregnancy Services 1560 W. Fourth Street Mansfield, OH 44906.
