He was predeceased by : his parents, Velma Quarles Powell and Elzie Powell; his wife Julia Powell; his children, Lawrence J. Powell and Rhonda L. Powell; and his siblings, Bland Powell, Daisy McClain, Dot Doolittle and Maggie Rushton.

He is survived by : his daughter Deborah Powell King; and his grandchildren, Chris McNeely (Christina), Chad McNeely (Terri), Kendall Powell and Stacy Bolin (Justin).
