He was predeceased by: his parents, Gilbert Joseph and Eleanor Catherine Martin (Gundrum); and his siblings, Eleanor Zibung (Valentine "Val"), Geraldine V. Olsen-Day (Norman Olsen), Eileen A. Luedtke (Elroy), Marietta P. Scheid (Dan), Gilbert A. Martin (Jan) and Louis Martin (Patricia).

He is survived by: his sons, Norman J. Martin (Janet), Mark J. Martin (May) and Michael J. Martin; his grandchildren, Theodore "Ted" Martin (Lexi), Thomas and Martin; his great grandchild Cece Martin; his girlfriend Patricia Reimann; and the mother of his children Laura Martin. He is also survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

“I had the privilege of meeting Don when I taught in the sociology department at UWO in the ‘90’s. Although I was limited-term and part time, Don welcomed me as a colleague, respected and encouraged me. Don was always interested in my work to combat gender violence and other community involvements. He regularly checked in with me about being a new mom, too. I could see how he cared for and respected his students and colleagues. My deep sympathy to his family and especially, his dear Patricia.”
