He was predeceased by: his parents, Julius Staerkel and Bertha Staerkel (Schuff); and his siblings, Julius Staerkel (Carmen), Russell Staerkel (Anne), Infant David Staerkel, Lillian Hunter, Ruth Quallman (Don), Naomi Staerkel and Suzanne Staerkel.
He is survived by: his pet Mousie; his wife Shirley Schlichting; his children, Victoria Staerkel, Vernon R. Staerkel and Kent Staerkel (Jodi); his grandchildren, Courtney Kraut, Tyler, Cody Staerkel, Morgan, Jake and Riley Staerkel; and his great grandchild Dawson Kraut. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund in Vernon's name is being established for Zion Lutheran Church.
